Homologation is the technical compliance certification that proves a vehicle meets Belgian and European standards. For a car that is not originally European, or that has been modified, this step is often required before registration. We guide you through the whole process, together with a certified centre, so your vehicle is ready to be registered.

Three cost components, two parties

Homologation base fee
~2.200 excl. VAT
Paid to the certified centre

Paid directly to the homologation centre (e.g. RVO Belgium), not to AutoLink M.A.T.

Common technical adaptations
300 to 600 incl. VAT
Paid to the certified centre

Lighting, speedometer, and so on. The amount depends on the vehicle.

AutoLink M.A.T. coordination
350 + 21% btw
AutoLink M.A.T.

Our coordination (transport, E705, homologation and keuring) is the Physically here tier at 350 euro + 21% btw. Same rate as on the import cost calculator.

To avoid confusion: the base fee and the adaptations are paid to the certified centre, not to AutoLink M.A.T. Our coordination work is already included in the 350 euro excl. btw tier, so you do not pay twice for the same thing.

What is homologation and why is it needed?

A car sold new in the European Union already has European type approval. A vehicle from outside the EU, such as a US-spec car, does not. Homologation checks and certifies that the vehicle meets Belgian technical standards (lighting, lights, emissions, speedometer, and so on) and then allows registration. Without it, the car cannot legally be put on the road.

Homologation of an American car in Belgium

This is our specialty. American cars almost always need adaptations before they can drive in Belgium: the lights (indicators, tail lights), headlight alignment, sometimes the speedometer from miles to km/h, and other compliance points. We know what a typical US vehicle needs, we coordinate the adaptations with the certified centre, and we guide you all the way to registration.

How long does homologation take?

The duration depends on the vehicle and the adaptations needed. Typically expect [DURÉE TYPIQUE] once the file is complete and the appointment at the centre is set. We give you a realistic estimate as soon as we know your vehicle.

The next step: customs clearance and registration

Homologation usually comes before final registration and the BIV calculation. Once your vehicle is homologated, we continue with customs clearance and registration. For a full overview of import costs, use our cost calculator.

Common questions
No. It depends on the car and where it comes from. Some vehicles need much more technical work than others before they can move toward Belgian registration. A car that already meets European standards often does not need homologation.
The homologation base fee and the technical adaptations are paid to the certified centre, directly by you. AutoLink M.A.T. does not charge those fees. Our role is the coordination, which is already included in the Physically here tier at 350 euro excl. btw.
The Physically here tier at 350 euro excl. btw covers our coordination: transport, the E705 document, homologation and keuring. It is the same rate shown on our import cost calculator. It does not include the fees paid to the certified centre (base fee and adaptations).
